Not the navel orange - although it is healthy for you. What we're talking about here is the human navel, also known as the umbilicus or belly button.
The navel is our first connection to this life. It is the original location for sustenance during the period of our fetal development.
Many ancient civilizations reference the navel as being the root of health. Within Chinese medicine, which developed primarily from text recorded in the Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine) between 200 BC and 100 AD, one particular acupuncture point, known as Shen Que or the Spirit Gateway, is located in the center of the umbilicus. It is one of only two points on the body that in Chinese medicine is strictly forbidden for acupuncture needling, and is instead normally treated by moxibustion or massage. The Shen Que can also be translated as God's Watchtower, the inference being that this point watches over all the others in the body. It is seen as the source of inherited Qi (or life essence), the entry and exit point of the spirit, and as mentioned, the source for fetal nourishment. This point is used later in life to improve failing Qi (life essence) and failing energy, and also sometimes used to treat conditions affecting the abdomen and nearby organs.
Within Ayurvedic medicine, which developed over 5,000 years ago in the Himalayas, is identified seven energy centers, or chakras, of the body. According to Ayurvedic tradition, these energy centers, if blocked, result in illness. One of the seven chakras is the Navel chakra. Some traditions place supremacy within these chakras on the head chakra, while the Taoist alchemists start with the Navel chakra. It is seen as the major emotional center of well-being and the main store of life energy. It is viewed as the first connection with the outside world. This connection is seen in Ayurvedic tradition as continuing even after the umbilical cord has been cut, and represents both our enduring link to the rest of humanity as well as to heaven.
Two Old Testament scriptures mention the navel in the context of health:
"Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly." (Job 40:16)
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones." (Proverbs 3:5-8)
